Adults Counseling

If you're experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, addiction, or other emotional issues, help is available. Emotional pain does not come from nowhere; everyone has a story to tell. Understanding and processing your story is worth the effort and energy to live in freedom and heal from your past. As my client, you will have a safe environment in which you are able to not just tell your story, but also to own it, process it, and heal from it.

Teen Counseling

Does your teen struggle with social anxiety, behaviors that impact your relationships, thoughts of self-harm, suicidal or homicidal ideations or frequent highs and lows in emotions? Do they want to live without racing thoughts, sleepless nights, or rocky relationships? If your teen is feeling stuck and trapped by their anxiety, depression, or communication difficulties please reach out to me. I work with teens from 13 - 18 to develop new coping skills, communicate more effectively, and conflict resolution techniques. My approach to therapy is collaborative and incorporates the strengths and needs of the individual.

Couples Counseling

If you have ever felt stuck or complacent in your relationship, counseling can be beneficial to couples who are looking to develop, strengthen and secure their emotional connection, in all stages of their relationship. Therapy sessions are held with both couples and is a supportive place to discuss issues and solutions to better strengthen your relationship.

PHILOSOPHY

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people's difficulties, and so change the way they feel.

SOLUTION FOCUSED THERAPY

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term goal-focused evidence-based therapeutic approach which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than dwelling on problems. SFBT can be extremely helpful for long term growth and change.

INTERPERSONAL
THERAPY

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is a time-limited psychotherapy that focuses on interpersonal issues, which are understood to be a factor in the genesis and maintenance of psychological distress. The targets of IPT are symptom resolution, improved interpersonal functioning, and increased social support.

PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY

The psychodynamic approach includes all the theories in psychology that see human functioning based upon the interaction of drives and forces within the person, particularly unconscious, and between the different structures of the personality.

About John:

I have considerable experience working with children and families who are involved with the Child In Need of Care system and the Juvenile Justice Administration system within Kansas. I have worked with families experiencing difficulties with Parenting issues, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiance and Anger issues.

I work closely with individuals, couples and families who are experiencing issues related to stress management, relationship enhancement, communication, conflict resolution, relaxation, time management and assist with techniques for self-care.

I work extensively with individuals having difficulties with depression, anxiety, bipolar, grief and loss, divorce, adjustment disorders and unresolved childhood trauma.

I utilize the Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) approach. I believe through a clear understanding of your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes you can better understand your feelings. I also utilize other techniques such as Eclectic, Family Systems, and Solution Focused Brief (SFBT).

It is often difficult to ask for help or accept an open hand when feeling lost, overwhelmed, anxious or confused. It’s at that moment your decision to seek therapy can be life changing. I would consider it a privilege to accompany you on your journey.
